MORE THAN 100 WANT "TO BE LIKE ASHA". - From the Daily Herald Feb. 16

FIRST EVER I WANNA BE LIKE ASHA WALK AND RUN ON STATIA

The St. Eustatius Sports Foundation, Statia Get In Shape (JOGG), St. Eustatius Arts and Cultural Heritage Foundation (STACH) together with the St. Eustatius Tourism Development Foundation (STDF) hosted the I Wanna Be Like Asha walk/run for the very first time on the island, February 9th, 2016.  The sport activity is part of STDF's tourism awareness campaign, which commenced November last year and is expected to run until September this year. Each month the department showcases different forms of tourism that exists locally.

In this months sports tourism event, Ms. Asha Robins, Statia’s very own local track and field  athlete was showcased. I Wanna Be Like Asha started at the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Airport with a speech by Mr. Derick Simmons who, represented the commissioner of Sports Mr. Reginald Zaandam. Followed by an introduction and speech by Ms Teena Lopes, Public Relations Officer and one of the coordinators of the event.

Asha and team performed a warm up exercise to kick start the fitness walk/run, whereby subsequently the runners started by the alertness of the police siren and walkers as immediately after. Asha has been doing an awesome job taking part in various competitions on overseas. The event was organized with the meaning of a New Year’s resolution and motivational drive, towards a healthy and fitness approach, and not only that, but to also show appreciation for the talented individual, giving her the recognition she deserves. "Ms. Robins is an icon on the island, Statia’s very own energizer bunny".

The marathon lasted approximately one hour and ended at the new harbor pavilion, otherwise known as the dock or boardwalk. DJ Sense entertained the crowd of over 100 participants and other spectators. Many persons were amazed to see a table filled with plaques, medals and trophies won by Asha,  dating back to 1990.

WINAIR NAMED OFFICIAL AIRLINE FOR STATIA WOMENS DAY CONFERENCE

ORANJESTAD, St. Eustatius  – Windward Islands Airways International (WINAIR), has been named the official airline for the Women’s Day Conference. The conference and Gala will be held at the Mike Van Putten Youth Centre March 4^th & 5^th 2016, during which delegates will discuss various topics relating to the theme of the event; “Step it up for gender Equality.

As the official event carrier, WINAIR will facilitate transportation of delegates to the conference. It is expected that the relationship will sustain beyond this inaugural conference.

 “WINAIR has been the dependable airline for St. Eustatius for half a century and we are thankful for their support of this conference,” said Charles Lindo, the Director of Tourism.

SUSAN L. TAYLOR TO KEYNOTE WOMEN'S DAY CONFERENCE ON STATIA

ORANJESTAD, St. Eustatius - Former Essence magazine’s editorin-chief and motivational speaker in the United States and the Caribbean Susan L. Taylor will be the keynote speaker of the upcoming Women’s Day Conference to commemorate World Women’s Day on St. Eustatius. The theme of the event, which is scheduled for March 4 and 5 at Mike E. van Putten Youth Centre, is “Step It Up For Gender Equality.” 

Taylor is well-known for serving Essence from 1981 through 2000. In 2006, she founded the National CARES Mentoring Movement to provide the most vulnerable youth with much-needed mentoring from able and caring adults. The organization’s national volunteer affiliate network connects adults to local youth-serving organizations. 

Statia’s Women’s Day Conference is a collaborative effort between St. Eustatius Business Association STEBA and the tenth European Development Fund’s Programme for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises in the Caribbean Overseas Countries and Territories, together with St. Eustatius Promotion of International Culture and Education (SPICE), the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and St. Eustatius Tourism Development Foundation STDF. 

The Conference will feature local, regional and international speakers, who will share their experience and expertise on a range of topics, such as empowering yourself to be your own Chief Executive Officer, leadership development and refinement, work/life balance, and workplace/business challenges. The main goal of this conference is bringing local and regional women managers, entrepreneurs and business “guru’s” together to share same practices and new ideas. According to organizers, the conference is deemed to be beneficial for small and medium-sized businesses, as women entrepreneurs are among the European Union’s focus groups. 

“The Conference theme “Step it up for gender equality” encourages women to take a greater role in changing the course of their own lives, and in being a force for change in their communities,” said STEBA President Winston Fleming.
